FRIDAY

The hallway had a flickering light; the tiles shined darkly. Burning Church walked toward the end. Some of the classroom doors were stuck ajar. He glanced casually in rooms he passed. The history teacher with the room on the left was on leave. He glanced into her room incidentally. Burning Church caught sight of somebody taking a poster off the wall. He stopped, turned around, peered in again. The history teacher’s girlfriend was holding the poster. She curled it up and put it in one of the cardboard boxes that were set on unoccupied student desks. The history teacher’s substitute stood behind the classroom desk watching. Burning paused and watched. The history teacher’s girlfriend realized she was being watched from the flickering hall; she caught her hands around herself and turned to Burning indecipherably. Burning was startled. She looked closer and her glare softened. “Mr. Church!” she cried. She put her hand to her mouth guiltily. “I’m sorry. Hi,” said Burning. There was silence between them. “Am I intruding?” Burning asked. The woman breathed. “No,” she said. The substitute teacher regarded Burning. Burning did nothing. “Come in,” said the history teacher’s girlfriend. Burning considered her. Her name was Esther. Burning stepped into the classroom. She came to him, threw her arms at him. The embrace was unexpected. Burning felt she hugged him for a considerable time. He did know her. He met her first at a lawn social three years ago. Last year he accepted a dinner invitation at her house with the history teacher. She let him go. “What are you doing?” asked Burning. “I don’t know,” Esther coughed. Burning looked at the cardboard boxes on the student desks. The substitute teacher slunk back. She chewed on her fingers. Burning didn’t know her name. He looked at Esther. Her eyes were shaded. They didn’t say anything. “How are you?” asked Burning. “I’m not supposed to be here,” she said. She held her face. “Where is Lucretia?” asked Burning. Esther looked at the light. “At home,” she said. Burning stood. Esther didn’t look at him. Nothing happened and Burning felt unsure. Finally Esther spoke again. “I’m just here to take care of some things,” she said. “That’s nice,” said Burning. He clucked his tongue. “I haven’t seen you in so long,” he said. Esther sighed unevenly. “I hope everything is …” said Burning. Esther looked at him. “It hasn’t been announced yet,” she said. She didn’t move, except her mouth trembled. “What?” said Burning. Esther turned her hands around. She didn’t say anything. “Lucretia isn’t coming back,” she said. The baby was coming later, Burning thought. “She’s not coming back,” Burning said. “What is she doing?” Esther was breathless. She surveyed the room. “Almost done,” she said. “What’s the matter?” asked Burning. “Do you see anything that maybe I don’t see that belongs to Lucretia that I haven’t packed yet that I need to pack or it will get left here?” she asked. Burning looked around the room. “Oh—that print of Washington crossing the Delaware,” he said.
